Job Description:
The Visiting Professor of Law will direct and teach in our Criminal Defense Clinic. The Criminal Defense Clinic is a one semester program in which students carry a caseload of misdemeanor and traffic violation cases to be handled under the ! direct supervision of the Professor, who is the attorney of re! cord on each matter. The Professor will be responsible for all case supervision, training and mentoring of students, and teaching the component class that meets twice each week for two hours each session. During the periods between academic semesters, the Interim Director is responsible for handling all cases and client matters.
Essential functions of the position include but are not limited to:
Directing and teaching an eight credit clinical program
Supervising up to ten students each semester
Researching and recommending texts applicable to clinical program and other teaching presentations
Preparing, delivering, and grading examinations in a timely manner
Actively networking with community organizations to determine community needs and establishing a client base
In addition, this position will attend and participate in School of Law events as well as local and national conferences relating to clinical legal education, participate as a member of! the School of Law and University committees, and maintain a level of confidentiality and discretion when supporting students and their families.
Requirements:
A J.D. or LL.B. from an accredited law school is required as well as a minimum of three years criminal defense experience. Candidates must be members in good standing with the Rhode Island Bar or have the ability to become one within one year of beginning in this position. Prior teaching experience is preferred.
