Reporting to the Milne Port Environmental Coordinator, the role will be operating the research vessel to assist consultants in the marine programs during the summer season. This is a seasonal position. The individual will also provide training to the Inuit boat assistants on the safe and proper operation of the Research Vessel. This role involves managing logistics to execute various environmental monitoring programs as required under Baffinland’s permits.

Reporting to the Milne Port Environmental Coordinator, the role will be operating the research vessel to assist consultants in the marine programs during the summer season. This is a seasonal position. The individual will also provide training to the Inuit boat assistants on the safe and proper operation of the Research Vessel. This role involves managing logistics to execute various environmental monitoring programs as required under Baffinland’s permits.
Main Accountabilities:
- Ensuring the vessel is operated and everyone on board of the vessel is following BIM’s policies and procedures;
- Checking weather conditions and making decisions on when it is not safe to operate;
- Communicating with Milne Port Capitan’s prior to starting their day and upon completion with scope of activities for the vessel;
- On stand by for emergency response activities in Milne Port; man over board, spill response etc.
- Ensure the vessel is fit for operation, all pre and post op inspections are completed on the vessel, zodiacs and reporting any deficiencies to supervisor;
- Perform basic maintenance tasks such as refuelling and leak checks and reporting deficiencies
- Communicating with the Environmental Coordinator on daily requirements, preventative maintenance requirements and tasks;
- Working directly with BIM Consultants on behalf of Baffinland;
- Provide training to Inuit employees on safe and proper boat operation;
- Daily check ins on progress or concerns with the Environmental Coordinator;
- Attending daily morning tool box talks with Site Environment/Consultants.
- Addressing concerns by identifying short-term and long-range issues and recommending options and courses of actions in regards to boat operation and program execution
Main Qualifications:
- Good computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
- Must possess effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with a strong ability to effectively communicate in English (written and oral)
- Strong analytical, problem – solving and decision making abilities, excellent organizational and time management skills.
- Strong understanding of Transport Canada Regulations (Eg. Collision Regulations)
- Familiarity with operating hydraulic A-Frame and davit arm winch systems on vessels
- Experience tending divers and participating in dive operations considered an asset
- Spill response at sea, Oil Pollution Prevention Response experience considered and asset
- Experience operating a large vessel
- Diploma from a vocational institution
- From 5 years to less than 7 years marine experience
- Driver’s License
- Small Vessel Operators Proficiency (SVOP) Required
- Marine Digital Radio Operators Certificate (ROC-M) Required
- Marine Emergency Duties (MEDS) A3, (Small Domestic Vessel – Basic Safety SDV-BS) Required
- Spill response at sea, Oil Pollution Prevention Response experience considered an asset
- Dive Accident Management and O2 provider certificate Preferred
